Bord Na Mona Blackwater Bog Rail Tour

This unique railway tour carries you through the Blackwater Bog on a circular 9km (6 mile) route, revealing many of the secrets of this fascinating and alluring Irish landscape. From a distance, it appears bleak, barren and mysterious. But don’t be fooled – this tour provides a fascinating look into Blackwater Bog’s rich history, and its value to the people of Ireland in both ecological and economic terms.
Hosted on the Clonmacnoise and South Offaly Railway, the tour covers Ireland’s only stretch of bog railway that permits public access. It provides a rare opportunity to examine the bog closely and observe the variety of wildlife it supports and protects. These include a variety of birds, insects and plants, ranging from extraordinary wildflowers to traditional purple heather.
The tour is highlighted by informative commentary, telling the story of bog formation and the advent of the use of peat for fuel. You’ll learn about the process by which the Blackwater Bog was formed, from glacial formation to lake and onward through the years until it reached its current evolutionary state. You’ll discover that the landscape changes continually, though invisibly – and that someday this bog will be gone, replaced by common fields and forests.
The contents of the tour focus on the past, present and future of the bog, and the people, plants, and animals it sustains. Unique, close-up encounters are available when the train stops at various strategic points so that visitors can participate in turf digging; watch demonstrations of peat cutting and drying procedures; and even pick bog cotton to keep as a souvenir.
Tea and porter cake, to enjoy on the bog, are also available. The Visitor Centre offers additional information, including an audiovisual presentation filled with background knowledge.
A lengthier nature trail walk, with a guided field study tour, is also available, but advance reservations are required.
Note: The tour runs from April to October only.
