Bective Abbey

Dedicated to the Blessed Virgin, this Cistercian Abbey was founded by the King of Meath, Murchadh O’ Nelaghin, in 1150. Before removal to Dublin, Hugh de Lacy’s remains were interred here in 1195. Bective Abbey was important because the abbot also maintained a seat in Parliament.
Thomas Asgarde rented the property after the suppression In 1536 and it passed on to several different owners, eventually falling into ruins. Today, visitors can still see the cloister, a figure holding a crozier, and a few intricately carved arches.
