Clonofin Monument

The Clonofin Monument, located at Clonofin, Ballinalee, in County Longford, is dedicated to the North Longford Flying Column, a group of soldiers who fought during the Irish War for Independence in the early 1920’s. They were led by General Sean McEoin, who was also known as “the Blacksmith of Ballinalee”.

The North Longford regiment is mainly remembered for the heroic ambush of February 2, 1921, when they attacked the enemy by exploding a landmine under their convoy of lorries and then fought a fierce gun battle for over two hours, seizing 18 rifles, 20 revolvers and a Lewis gun.
