Carrick-on-Shannon Castle Remains

The castle here was built in 1611 and given to Sir Maurice Griffith. It was built as protection for the settlers coming to live in the area. The only image of the original building survives on the seal created for the Carrick-on-Shannon Corporation, which existed from 1613-1856. Only a small section of masonry from the original building remains on the site.

The English held possession of the castle through repeated attempts by the native Irish to capture it. Deemed insufficient as a protective settlement, a walled town was built further downstream, called Jamestown. The Carrick Castle was taken by Cromwellians in 1652.
