Cathedral of the Assumption

Bishop James Doyle, a staunch advocate of Catholic freedom in Ireland, built this attractive church in 1883. It features many remarkable stained glass windows and original pieces of furniture such as the bishop’s chair and stalls.
The cathedral houses an impressive piece created by John Hogan, an Irish sculptor. The marble sculptured figures depict the Bishop praying for the restoration of his country, and the country of Ireland personified as a young woman, in a dignified but poignant position of prayer as well.
